Mother’s Day is a special time to celebrate and show appreciation for all the amazing moms out there. As a teacher, you can help your special education students make thoughtful and heartfelt gifts for their moms. Here are some simple ideas for Mother’s Day gifts that are easy to make in the classroom.
Handmade cards
Students of all abilities can make a handmade card. If able, students can write a message to their mother. Other options include having the student trace a message or cut/paste words into a message created by you! To make a cut/paste message, leave write down words that can be switched out of the message on individual pieces of paper. The student can choose which word will go in the blank!
How can you decorate the handmade card? Handprint cards are a classic Mother’s Day gift that never goes out of style. Have students trace their handprints onto construction paper, cut them out, and decorate them with markers or stickers. Write a sweet message on the inside and moms will love receiving a special card from their child.
Supplies needed:

DIY Magnets
Make your own magnets with just some cardboard or foam board, paint, and magnet tape. Cut out squares or any other shape you desire and have students paint them. Once the paint is dry, add magnet tape to the back. These magnets can be used to display photos or artwork on the fridge.

Seed planters
Planting seeds in a small pot is a great way to incorporate science into your Mother’s Day gifts. Choose seeds that will germinate into flowers quickly, like marigolds or zinnias. Students can observe the seeds grow and by the time the flowers start to sprout, they can add a cute tag or card and send it home for Mother’s Day.
