How To Make an Image Reveal Token Board

As a special education teacher, you’re likely familiar with the traditional token board system as a way to reinforce positive behavior. But have you heard of an image reveal token board? This creative twist on the traditional token board not only reinforces positive behavior, but also adds an element of fun and excitement for students. In this blog post, we’ll show you how to make your own image reveal token board and provide some tips on how to use it effectively in your classroom.

What is an image reveal token board?

An image reveal token board is a unique approach to the traditional token board system that can help motivate students and reinforce positive behavior. Instead of earning tokens, students work towards earning the pieces to a larger picture. Once all the pieces have been earned, the full image is revealed and the student receives their reinforcer.

The image on the board can be anything from a cartoon character to a favorite animal or sports team. The key is to choose an image that is visually appealing to the student and reinforces positive behavior. By using an image that the student is interested in, they are more likely to be motivated to work towards earning the pieces to complete the image.

In addition, the element of surprise and anticipation can add excitement to the process of earning rewards. As the student earns each piece, they get closer to revealing the full image and receiving their reinforcer. This can make the process of earning rewards more engaging and enjoyable for the student

Step-by step guide to creating an image reveal token board:

  1. Choose an image: The first step is to select an image that is meaningful and visually appealing to the student. This can be a favorite cartoon character, animal, or sports team.
  2. Trace the image onto a board:  Create a board that will hold the pieces.  This can a poster board or construction paper that will be laminated.
  3. Cut out the board:  You could skip this step if you want to decorate the outside of the image with stickers or words.
Steps to make a image reveal token board
  1. Laminate: Laminate the image and/or the board that will hold the pieces.
  2. Divide the image into pieces: The number of pieces should correspond to the number of desired behaviors or steps that the student needs to complete to earn the full image.
  3. Trace and number the pieces: Trace the pieces onto the board and number each one.  I like to do this so students know how many pieces they have left to earn.
  4. Add Velcro: Attach Velcro strips to both the board and the back of each image piece.
  5. Determine the reinforcer: Decide on a reinforcer for when the full image is revealed.
  6. Implement the board: Once the board is created, introduce it to the student and explain how it works. Start with simple tasks and gradually increase the difficulty as the student becomes more comfortable with the system.
  7. Monitor progress: Keep track of the student’s progress and provide positive feedback as they earn each piece. Once the full image is revealed, be sure to provide the reinforcer and celebrate the student’s success
