Creating a Sensory Toolbox in Your Self-Contained Classroom

Doing sensory activities in a self-contained or autism classroom is always fun. I was always lugging items back and forth to school when wanting to do an activity. That is when I decided to go on one shopping trip to stock my classroom closet with ingredients, materials, and tools needed for various sensory activities. What sensory activities am I talking about?- slime, oobleck, sensory bins, shaving cream, etc. This year I have decided to send parents home a list of needed items. They can donate any items they would like. This will keep costs down for me 🙂

Sensory bin fillers:

It’s always nice to switch out sensory bins to give students a new experience. Here are some popular sensory bin fillers that I like to have on hand.

  • various pastas- elbows, penne, rigatoni, etc.
  • popcorn kernels
  • various dried beans
  • dried rice
  • sand
I change our sensory bin fillers out every couple of weeks!

Ingredients:

  • shaving cream containers (a lot of them! I seem to run out quickly)
  • Borax (slime recipe)
  • liquid starch (slime recipe)
  • cornstarch (oobleck recipe)
  • food coloring (to color anything!)
  • baking soda (to make things bubble)
  • glitter (to add to slime)
We used liquid starch to make this slime. It was so nice to have all the ingredients ready to go! We decided to make this slime in the moment 🙂

Tools :

  • large bowl
  • measuring spoons
  • measuring cup
  • large mixing spoon
